Chapter Twenty

The plan had always been to go back home after making sure her mother was safe, but like most things lately, that plan seemed to have gone awry.

Alice drifted off to sleep while listening to Kerry’s breathing even out and become shallower. As she’d promised, Alice had constructed a wall of pillows right down the middle of the mattress, sure it would remain securely in place, but of course, it hadn’t. Somehow, through the night, the wall collapsed and now lay in ruins across the bed. Alice had woken up with her head resting on Kerry’s naked shoulder, Kerry’s erect nipple straining against her cotton vest, merely inches from Alice’s mouth.

As gently as she could, Alice tried to ease herself away. She was in bed with the nurse who was caring for her mother. Despite Alice’s feelings, she hadn’t hired Kerry in order to seduce her.

Hence the furtive escape.

Alice had to admit that her nipple did look rather delicious to say the least. The temptation to pull Kerry’s top to the side and slip it between her teeth…

Stop it!

The crisp white sheet slid off Kerry’s back as Alice gently removed her head from Kerry’s shoulder and onto the pillow. The silver glow of moonlight highlighted Kerry’s flawless physique. Her skin still bore the remnants of a summer tan.

Goosepimples erupted on Alice’s arms as she lay transfixed at the sight. Tucked away at the back of her mind was the desire to reach out and touch Kerry, to kiss her, to…

Forget about it, this can’t go anywhere.

Alice turned over, again keeping her movements as slow as she could possibly make them to avoid jostling and waking Kerry. As soon as Alice lay on her side, a soft hand touched her shoulder, and she knew, one way or another, that she was in big trouble.

‘I’m sorry,’ Alice whispered, looking at Kerry over her shoulder.

‘What for?’ Kerry asked.

‘For… for…’

‘You haven’t done anything, have you?’

‘No! Of course not. But I—’

Kerry gently pulled Alice onto her back and shifted up onto one elbow. ‘In that case, don’t say another word. If you do, I’ll be forced to shut you up… with a kiss.’

Alice couldn’t help herself. The excitement started to rise inside her.

‘But I’m—’

Nothing could have prepared Alice for the explosion of Kerry’s kiss as Kerry cut short her protest by possessing her mouth, their tongues dancing together in a silent melody.

Alice let out a little groan at the schism of electricity Kerry’s touch sent through her. As though transported on a runaway train, her emotions whirled and skidded as her thoughts spun out of control. The timing was so wrong. Kerry deserved to know what she was letting herself in for before things went any further.

Alice pulled away. ‘Kerry. We shouldn’t.’

‘Why?’ Kerry whispered softly as she removed her top in one swift movement. ‘We’re both adults.’

Kerry’s fingers unbuttoned Alice’s shirt and pushed it back as her lips seared a path down Alice’s neck to her shoulders, blazing a trail of fire across her
